Smugglers in Portugal

During seven days, you will discover the Natural Park of Douro.

Walking through magnificent valleys and canyons following the customs boundary trails where time has stopped. Off the beaten tracks, in a breathtaking setting out of the ordinary, you will receive training to survival techniques and sleep four nights in bivouacs… A stunning adventure!

Become a bootlegger of the Douro!

Day 1

Arrival and welcoming at Miranda do Douro in Portugal. Equipment check-up and mental preparation for the survival trip. Management of emotional intelligence and first challenge of navigation with map and compass. Diner and night in a homestay.

Day 2

Breakfast at the homestay. Briefing on survival basic techniques (what is a survival situation?), priorities, dangers, goals, etc. Start of the trek through terrific landscapes. Initiation to navigation in Wilderness with map and compass, heading, map reading, …

Your goal for the day is the beginning of survival: find a river to follow it to its source, forage fruits and edible wild plants. You will also have to start a friction fire with just a couple pieces of wood, lay traps, and make a shelter to spend the night. Diner will be prepared on the fire with the harvest of the day. Night in bivouac.

Day 3

Wake up in the heart of the National Park, far from tourist trails, in an authentic setting. Check the traps, purify collected water and start walking! Along the way to the second camp, you might glimpse black cranes, griffins, Egyptian vultures, royal eagles and Bonelli eagles nesting on the tall granitic cliffs.

By the fire, we’ll talk about the goals we’ve already reached, team cohesion, share tales and impressions about our environment. When night falls, we’ll see a few constellations useful for star navigation, and walk in the dark without light. Night in bivouac.

Day 4

We apply on the field what we previously learned, a challenge to mental and physical fortitude. You will have to transport fire from a camp to another. We’ll go over the basic of distress signals and first-aid skills. Night in bivouac.

Day 5

Check the traps, forage for edible plants and bugs. Gathering of previous day’s distilled water. Morning around the campfire, tales and reminders of previous days courses. The afternoon will be filled by an orientation trek with map and compass, and foraging for edibles. We will then build a shelter for the whole group, and spend the night inside it.

Day 6

Cleaning of the campsite, initiation to field ecology, fire security and we leave the camp.

Return to Miranda. Debrief. Relaxation time, hot shower and other delights. Diner and night at a home stay.

Day 7

Breakfast, end of the course. Transfer to Porto’s airport (optional).

What people say

Wow !! (friends will laugh) What an experience !! You come back changed! I learned a lot about myself, tapping on my own reserves, taking care of others, nobody knew each other at the start, to finally become a welded and united group. We shared so many beautiful things, unique moments in one life !! Thanks to Nadia and Denis (from who we’ve learnt a lot and who is a nice person)! Personally it's been a long time that I wanted to do one of these survival courses and I realized a dream!
